What are some different ways to lace a shoe? Sneakers are in style now more than ever. They’re a quick, go-to shoe for when you’re running errands, hitting the gym, or if you’re just wanting to dress down a glamorous or formal outfit into a more casual look. Another quick and free way to add a little bit of style to your sneakers are to tie your shoelaces in different patterns and styles. Let’s take a look at some of the different shoelace tying techniques.
Diamond Laces
Thread laces through the third holes from over. Cross laces and thread through the first holes from under. On the same side, thread laces through the second hole from over. Cross laces under the third hole laces and thread laces through the fifth hole from under. On the same side, thread the laces through the fourth hole from over. Finish by crossing the laces and thread through the final hole from under and tie a standard knot.
Double Lattice Weave
Thread laces evenly through the top two holes on the inner side of the shoe. Thread the laces through the opposite side’s third and fourth hole from under, keeping laces perpendicular. Thread laces to opposite side’s fifth and sixth hole from top. Thread laces to opposite side’s fifth and sixth hole from under.
Thread laces through the opposite side’s third and fourth holes, with the left side’s sixth hole lace weaving under and over and the fifth hole lace weaving over and under the crossing laces. Thread the third and fourth laces to the opposite side’s first and second holes from top with the fourth hole lace weaving over and under and the third hole lace weaving under and over the crossing laces. Finish by threading the second hole lace through the original loop made by the first and second laces and tie a standard knot.
Linked Loops
Evenly thread laces from under through the bottom sixth holes. On the outer side of the shoe’s holes, thread laces over and under the next holes on the same side creating a loop. On the inner side of the shoe, weave the laces through the corresponding opposite lace loop and and back through the next open hole from top until you get to the final hole where you’ll thread the lace from under and tie a knot.
This style works well with Yeezys or shoes with fewer holes as well.
Classic Bars
Start by threading laces through the first top holes so there’s a straight bar giving the outer lace longer slack. On the outer side of the shoe, skip one hole and thread the lace through the next hole from under. Then thread the lace to the opposite hole from the top creating another bar. Staying on the same inner side of the shoe, skip the next hole and thread the lace from under through the fifth hole.
Thread lace across to the opposite hole creating another bar. Thread the lace through the last hole from under and back to the opposite hole from top. Then you’ll repeat the steps moving upwards creating bars in the empty holes keeping the pattern of threading under on the same side to get to the next hole and from top when crossing sides to create the bars. When final bar is complete, tie a knot and tuck under the inner side of the shoe.
X-Loops
Thread laces from under through top holes creating a straight bar. On the same side for both sides, thread laces from top and under through to the next hole. Once at the final bottom hole, cross laces and thread through the loops that were created. Continue to work way up shoe creating the X pattern for each loop, tightening laces as you move up. Tie knot after threading through final top loops.
The different ways to tie shoelaces aren’t just limited to the lacing, you can also jazz up a casual sneaker look by adding different knotting techniques.
Curly Knot
First, thread your laces in any style you’d like. Take the remaining lace and create four to five small loops stacked on top of each other. You can use your finger to help keep the shape. Take the remaining lace and thread it through the mini loops created starting from the inner most loop. Repeat on other side. You can leave laces hanging or cross them for a cleaner look.
Butterfly Knot
First, thread your laces in any style you’d like. Take top laces and create one knot to hold laces in place. Create a second knot with out fully tightening it, creating a small square opening. Take both laces together, wrapping them over your finger forward in the direction of the toes. Pull laces from around the finger back under the square opening with out pulling them all the way through. Tighten and adjust the four loops into a butterfly shape.
